YOUTH PROGRAMS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IF OUR SCHOOL/ORGANIZATION DOESN'T HAVE THE BUDGET TO DO THIS PROGRAM?

Here at EmPower U Equine, our focus is partnering with you for success to help you and your organization. We will never turn anyone down, and will find a way to work within your budget. You can call any of us to make arrangements, and we commit to always being able to help.

HOW DO WE GET THERE?

We do not provide transportation to the arena, that is the responsibility of the school or the organization. We can provide you with great directions, as we know travelling on country roads can sometimes be a challenge. We also have a map on our website to help you out. There is lots of parking and places for a school bus or large van to turn around.

EQUIPMENT? CLOTHING?

We have you covered! All participants under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet for safety reasons, and we have those here for you.

Otherwise, just wear your closed toe shoes, dress for the weather, and dress in comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty! Remember we are working with horses. They don’t care if you have your most expensive jeans on, or your favourite runners. Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirt on!

PERMISSION FORMS?

We will be in touch with you to make sure you have the necessary forms before you come to the arena. We don’t want to take too much time out of your experience worrying about paperwork.

CHAPERONES?

Although the facilitators will take over once the kids get to the arena, we do ask that there be one or two teachers, or staff members, that accompany the youth to the arena for the program.

IF I AM CHAPERONING WHERE CAN I WATCH FROM?

Great question! We do ask that parents, teachers and chaperones refrain from interacting with the participants during the program so the horses can do the teaching. While you are waiting you can have a seat in our upstairs viewing area where you will be able to see everything that is taking place.

ARE WE RIDING THE HORSES?

Our program works with the horses on the ground, not under saddle. We will place you in a team, and then you will get to pick your last teammate, the horse. This allows for the most authentic and beneficial experience, where the horse gets to be in its natural state, and can communicate the most effectively with the participants, allowing for experiential learning to take place.

WHAT SIZE WILL MY GROUP BE?

There will never be more than three people per horse. Our programs are designed to accommodate between 3-9 people. Your organization has more people than that? Not a problem! Just give one of us a call and we will figure something out for you… that’s why we’re here!

I’VE NEVER BEEN AROUND HORSES, CAN I STILL TAKE PART?

Absolutely, that’s the best part of it! Our program is specifically designed so that you do not need to have any experience with a horse. We will take you through safety, rules and precautions while you work with the horses in the arena. Your safety and the safety of our horses is always put first! We will make sure to help everyone feel comfortable and safe, and take into account your comfort level.

WHAT IF I'M SCARED OR DON'T LIKE HORSES?

Everyone has fears, that is perfectly normal. What a unique opportunity you will have to overcome those fears in the safety of our arena with our beautiful horses. The only way to grow is to face your fears, and step out of your comfort zone. We facilitate that for you while working with the horses, where they will help to communicate with you to crush those fears and become more confident. If you're not stepping out of your comfort zone, are you really learning?

WHAT IF IT'S RAINING, SNOWING, OR COLD OUT? WILL WE FREEZE?

EmPower U Equine operates out of one of the best facilities, Southern Cross Arena. Our enclosed facility will ensure you will be out of the rain and the wind, which will keep not only you happy, but also our horses. We do have an outside facility that can be used when the weather cooperates, but not if it’s too hot or windy. Dress for the weather! The arena isn’t heated, so when we embark on our Saskatchewan winter, we will operate when the weather cooperates. If we can be out there, you can too!

IS THERE A BATHROOM?

Yes! We have an indoor bathroom that can be used.

WHY HORSES?

Horses are prey animals that are completely in tune with their environments, and the stimulus that are present. The participants are the stimulus in our exercises, which allow the horses to communicate with them requiring the participants to adjust both their feelings and behaviours to be successful while working with our teachers.

WHAT IS ALL INCLUDED?

We ensure success by following our fundamental principals of delivery. Every time you come to the arena you will be greeted by our staff who will escort you to the classroom area. Here, we will go over the objective for the day and then head out to the arena to put it all in practice through our experiential hans-on programs. During the interaction with the horses, our facilitators will be there to help parallel what the student is experiencing back to real life. Once we are done in the arena we will head back into the classroom where we will talk about what everyone experienced. We solidify the experience through journaling and handouts for both the student and the teachers or staff members. Students will be given a bookmark of the horse they worked with that day to take home and remind them of what they learned, as well as a nutritious snack. And finally we will track each students participation and achievements through the process to help facilitate further growth outside of our arena.
